What After Effects does well
After Effects can do anything. With a 3D phone model, a plugin and enough time you can build any device animation you can imagine, and motion designers have done exactly that for years. If you need a one-off, fully custom film, it's still the tool.
Where Mockup Center is different
The catch is the time. In After Effects you find a device model, set up the screen, light and camera, keyframe every move and wait for the render. Learning that takes months; doing it for each video takes hours.
In Mockup Center you drag a screen recording onto one of 65 ready devices, pick animations from a menu and they line up on the timeline. A launch clip takes minutes. You can still set your own keyframes when a preset isn't enough.
When you do need After Effects for the final edit, Mockup Center exports transparent ProRes 4444 up to 8K, so the device drops straight into your composition.
After Effects is part of an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Mockup Center Premium is a one-time payment.
Which one should you pick?
For a bespoke brand film with complex motion, After Effects. For app launches, App Store previews and social clips you need this week, Mockup Center, and you can still finish in After Effects if you like.
